101 things I love about letters: #3 Portability

I'm about to head off on a little road trip. The kids are with their Dad for a few days and I have no work commitments for the next three days so I am taking advantage. I plan to meander around the Southern Highlands, then head down through the Kangaroo Valley until I hit the coast, then gradually wind my way back home.

I don't enjoy packing but at least my hobby is easy to pack. A pad of letter-writing paper, matching envelopes and a nice pen, and I'm done. Of course, I could take a few extra bits and pieces if I want to, but I don't really need to. In fact, if I wanted to keep it really simple, I could just take a pen and my address book and pick up postcards on the way. I'm sure I will do that anyway!

If the weather is good then I might write some letters in scenic spots - in a park, on a bushwalk, sitting on the beach. So easy and simple! Imagine if my hobby was furniture making? Not sure you can take that one with you!

I'm also hoping to discover lots of little letter-writing goodies in op shops, craft stores, etc. Hmmm, my bags might be a bit fuller coming home...

  1. This is an amazing point.
When I move to California in two weeks, I'll be sure to pack my letter writing pad in my carry-on.
Writing at the beach sounds dreamy.
I love your blog, by the way :)

  2. Thank-you! I just checked out your blog and it looks great, too.
That's such a good idea to take letter supplies in your carry-on. I don't think I've written a letter on a plane yet, but I think it would be an excellent way to pass the time.
    Good luck with your move.

  3. Enjoy your getaway! I've been known to lug sewing machines and bags of fabrics on holidays with me, so yes, letter writing seems more convenient for on-the-go hobbies.

  4. I am home a day early... I had a lovely time, and sent a few bits of mail from various places (including a card for you, Charmaine)... but a head cold eventually got the better of me and I longed for the comforts of home...

The best bit was finding a very pretty letter in my PO Box on my return, from Sue in Massachusetts. Nice.
